CBD HEMP – Is this crop for you?

By Sarah Mitchell, King’s AgriSeeds Industrial Hemp Specialist

At King’s we bring crops to market that promote family farming and help maintain healthy crop rotations for our precious soil resources.  CBD Hemp is one of the most promising crops we’ve seen in decades.  If it feels like CBD Hemp has dropped from the sky and is spreading throughout the country like a storm, you are right!  There is a lot of information available but beware of scams.  Check multiple sources until you are satisfied that you’ve got solid facts.  Be assured that you can count on King’s for accurate, reliable advice.

Why King’s?

We have gone to great lengths to evaluate breeding companies and are working with Phylos Biosciences, the industry leader in CBD Hemp.  We recommend to you AutoCBD, a new variety that has been bred for a specific plant profile and vigorously tested at independent sites across the country.  It is grown from seed and harvested in about 75 days, a valuable reduction in risk compared to varieties with much longer crop cycles.

CBD Hemp is Not for Everyone

You must be interested in these qualities when choosing CBD Hemp:

  • Regulated specialty crop
  • Limited registered crop protection products
  • Only recent crop research available at University level
  • Potentially high value per acre
  • Unfamiliar / undeveloped mechanization, potentially hand harvesting
  • Dynamic market forces

Know the End Before You Begin

CBD Hemp takes solid planning upfront, concentrated effort in the growing cycle and prompt action at harvest time.  CBD Hemp is far too expensive to “sow some seed and watch what happens.”  Before you plant, you must have a reliable supply chain partner who will purchase your harvest.  Many processors will be requesting our variety because of its predictable harvest windows (yes, more than one!) and it’s reliable CBD yield.

Don’t Go It Alone!

Trustworthy collaborators will journey with you, including King’s AgriSeeds.  We can help you locate several excellent training sessions, websites and periodicals, reliable testing labs, and processors with certified Good Management Practices.  We are doing research on our own farm to advise you first-hand of successful cultural practices that enhance quality, combat weeds, control erosion and promote rich soil health.  Already we are finding that cover crops are not alike when followed by CBD Hemp.
