The King’s AgriSeeds team began with a presentation from Dave Wilson on crop rotations and explaining how to fit various rotations into your eco-zone. This included eco-zone differences and the effect on rotation and cropping systems and increasing forage productivity with rotations.

Guest Speaker Mike Velde, Alforex: Master of Science (M.S.), Agronomy, Plant Breeding and Plant Pathology from University of Wisconsin-Madison. Mike has many years’ experience previously as an alfalfa breeder for Dairyland Seed.

Veldespoke about Alfalfa and the Genetic Improvements in Alfalfa. His insight and experience was very useful to growers as he explained the features of the new varieties that King’s now has in their inventory. Mike emphasized the value of a shorter rotation (2 to 3 years) and also appropriate seeding rates to maximize yield. Mike explained the benefits of growing alfalfa in the rotation and the nitrogen credits for corn that improve yields, after a shorter rotation (2 to 3 years) with a dense stand of alfalfa, vs. leaving it in the 4th or 5th year.

David Hunsberger and Tracy Neff co-presented on the characteristics of corn, including variety selection and benefits of the floury starch component of corn hybrids that King’s carries.
