Milvus is a European red clover that is long-lived and has some spreading tendencies, with higher yield in its second growth year. A “mat clover”, Milvus produces runners, which helps it spread and close gaps in the stand better than other red clovers. It has good late fall growth and resistance to anthracnose, mildew, and stem rot.
Red clover is one of the fastest establishing legumes and can even be grown on more acid soils. It has hollow, hairy stems and branches. The main draw back is limited persistence and winter-hardiness, as well as difficulty with drying.
