Backen Black Oats

Backen Black Oat is a true Avena strigosa (also known as
Bristle Oat) variety. This variety should not be confused
with common black oats. Bracken is a cool season annual
cereal that provides excellent weed control, with the
species having allelopathic effects on small seed species.
True black oats are also known for inhibiting certain
nematodes. Scavenges nutrients. Late maturing variety
great for cover crop applications.
Productivity: Excellent growth during cool to 80 degrees.
Oats are a productive cool season annual.
Soil Adaptation: pH range 6.0-7.0. Backen oats do best on
sandy or loamy soils but can also grow in heavy clay soils
with low nutrient value. It has some resistant to drought
and prefers full sun.
Cover Crop Management Notes:
• The carbon to nitrogen ratio is lower than other winter
cereals. If high residue is desired, allow to come to
head before terminating.
