At King’s AgriSeeds we use a number of different seed coatings, both Conventional (CT) and OMRI-approved (OC), to improve seedling establishment and growth. As you look at our price sheet you will see another seed coating Yellow-Jacket (YJ). All of these coatings may come across as a little confusing, we’d like to take a minute or two to explain what these different coatings actually mean. Keep reading to get the full explanation.
An (OC) seed coating is approved for seed used in organic production. That means that all the components that make up the (OC) coating have been OMRI approved. Certified organic seeds that need a seed coating like Organic Liflex White Clover or Organic Mituva Meadow Fescue are coated with the (OC) coating. That seems pretty simple, right? Organic seed needs to have an organic approved coating. The rest of the certified organic seeds that do not need a coating are listed as (UT) untreated.
Now here is where seed coatings can get confusing:
The (OC) coating can also be used on conventional seed. An example of this would be Freedom Red Clover (OC). While the seed coating is approved for organic use, the seed itself is NOT certified organic.
Our (CT) coating is not used in organic production as the components in the coating, which may contain fungicide protectants, are not allowed in organic production systems. Yellow-Jacket (YJ) is only available on those Barenbrug seed products that are sold as coated. Yellow-Jacket (YJ) is also not used in organic productions systems as it’s coatings components are not approved for certified organics.
