Tim Fritz Makes Seed Drill Calibration a Part of Farmer Education at Winter Meetings

Tim speaking about drill calibration in ReedsvilleThe King’s Agriseeds team continued across Pennsylvania, presenting to a crowd of farmers in Reedsville, PA on Thursday 1/23/14. King’s speakers sought to cover concepts that were useful to the audience, instead of simply promoting products.

Pictured here, Tim Fritz, company owner, speaks to the crowd about the importance of calibrating their drills before planting. He emphasized that every seed lot is different, so you will have to calibrate before planting to have a good sense of how much seed you are dropping. You want to get the correct seeding rates drilled into your fields; you don’t want to be seeding too high a rate and run out of seed before you finish, nor do you want too low a rate and have to go back over the field again.

Tim spoke about the procedure of calibrating the drill and used a table top model of an Esch no-drill to demonstrate. The procedures for Drill Calibration are listed in our Product Information Guide on page 52.

Tim also spoke about a coated orchardgrass with a yellow-jacket coating that we will be trying, and explained that the coating will add some additional weight to the seed, which is taken into consideration with the recommended seeding rates. Coating on the seed is also said to help with flowability through the drill. Using the Esch table top model Tim demonstrated using both coated and uncoated orchardgrass seed, explaining how to adjust the seeding rate and calibrate the drill.
